The pharmacy of the world: domestic market size and growth, exports (including to the GCC), generics and branded-generics structure, price control (NLEM/DPCO), Jan Aushadhi, key companies and the opportunities to 2032.
India’s pharmaceutical industry is the world’s largest supplier of generic medicines by volume and a fast-growing domestic market in its own right. Published estimates for the 2025 domestic market range from USD 28.0 bn to USD 60.0 bn; our central estimate is USD 28.0 bn, growing at about 8% to USD 48.0 bn by 2032. Exports are of a similar order of magnitude and growing, led by the US, Africa, the UK and increasingly the GCC.
The domestic market is a branded-generics market: thousands of brands of the same molecules, sold through a dense distribution chain, with price control on NLEM molecules (DPCO) and the Jan Aushadhi scheme pushing unbranded generics. For hospital buyers this means large price dispersion for the same molecule — and large savings from tendering by molecule and class rather than by brand.
The chart shows the Consulting Wallah central estimate: published figures normalised to 2025, median taken, and projected at the median published growth rate. The published range for 2025 is USD 28.0 bn–USD 60.0 bn; differences are mostly scope.

Chronic therapies (cardiac, diabetes, respiratory, CNS) are the growth engine; hospital channel is consolidating with chains; trade generics and e-pharmacy are reshaping retail. Biosimilars (Biocon, Dr Reddy’s, Intas, Zydus, Lupin) and complex generics are the export upgrade.
Indian manufacturers supply a large and rising share of generics and biosimilars to Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the wider GCC; the gates are SFDA/MOHAP registration, GMP inspection, serialisation (RSD, Tatmeen) and a local agent. Localisation incentives in Saudi Arabia and the UAE are pulling Indian firms into JVs and local plants.

How to read these figures. Published market-size estimates for this market vary widely because publishers define scope differently (software only vs software + services + logistics). Where we show a Consulting Wallah estimate we state the range of published figures it is triangulated from and our scope. Figures marked as reported are quoted from the named source.
