Group purchasing organisations, pooled procurement, procurement outsourcing and advisory in healthcare: market size, the US GPO model (Vizient, Premier, HealthTrust), NUPCO and Rafed in the GCC, India’s emerging GPOs, and where the model is heading.
Group purchasing organisations and procurement services aggregate hospital demand to negotiate contracts, standardise products and run sourcing on members’ behalf. Published estimates for the 2025 market (GPO fees, procurement outsourcing and advisory for healthcare) range from USD 6.8 bn to USD 6.8 bn; our central estimate is USD 6.8 bn, growing at about 9% to USD 12.4 bn by 2032. The US model (Vizient, Premier, HealthTrust, Intalere) is the reference; the GCC has built state-backed equivalents (NUPCO in Saudi Arabia; Rafed under PureHealth in Abu Dhabi); India’s hospital chains act as internal GPOs and a few third-party platforms are emerging.
The economics are simple: a GPO typically saves members 10–18% on contracted categories and funds itself through administrative fees paid by suppliers (US) or government mandate (GCC). The risks are equally simple: contract compliance drifts, clinician preference items escape, and savings are claimed at award rather than realised in the ledger.
The chart shows the Consulting Wallah central estimate: published figures normalised to 2025, median taken, and projected at the median published growth rate. The published range for 2025 is USD 6.8 bn–USD 6.8 bn; differences are mostly scope.

NUPCO (Saudi) runs national tendering, warehousing and distribution for public entities and is expanding into private-sector services; Rafed (PureHealth) pools Abu Dhabi public and affiliated demand; Dubai Health and EHS run central procurement; private groups (Burjeel, NMC, Mediclinic, Al Habib) operate internal GPOs. Cross-border GCC pooled procurement for vaccines and selected medicines exists through the GCC Health Council.
Chains (Apollo, Fortis, Max, Manipal, Narayana) run central procurement; state corporations (TNMSC, KMSCL, RMSCL) pool public demand; third-party GPO/marketplace platforms are early-stage. The gap is in the long tail of standalone hospitals — exactly where a network-based model like the Consulting Wallah Network adds value.

How to read these figures. Published market-size estimates for this market vary widely because publishers define scope differently (software only vs software + services + logistics). Where we show a Consulting Wallah estimate we state the range of published figures it is triangulated from and our scope. Figures marked as reported are quoted from the named source.
